The race to take the crown of the world’s thinnest is on!
A few days ago we made the trip to Marina Bay sands in Singapore to witness Oppo’s release of the world’s thinnest smartphone, the R5. But It seems that the R5 won’t have that title for too long – rival Chinese firm Vivo is set to release an even thinner phone if their post at China’s microblogging site Sina Weibo is to be believed.
The company posted their mystery device on top of what appears to be an iPhone 5/5S. The new device is half the thickness of the iPhone 5/5S (which is 7.6mm) which means that Vivo’s newest smartphone could potentially be as thin as 3.8mm, beating out Oppo’s R5 by a full millimeter.
At that thickness, we’re really wondering what the internals of the new phone will be. Oppo had to develop a new compound that takes heat away from the components because of the R5’s anorexic frame, and removed the headphone jack entirely. We’re interested to see what the specs are on Vivo’s ultrathin phone, and hopefully someone takes it to the PH when it launches.
