The Xiaomi MIX Flip Is A Serious Galaxy Z Flip6 Contender

Xiaomi MIX Flip Quick Review verdict: The Xiaomi MIX Flip is a great, value-for-money foldable poised to take on the expensive, bloated pricing of the current flagship flips. The only question here is if it’ll ever take a trip outside the confines of China’s domestic market

Pros

  • Significantly less than its competitors
  • Flagship performance
  • Large cover screen
  • Great cameras

Cons

  • Global availability is still up in the air

With flip foldable price tags bloating this 2024, it’s unsurprising that Xiaomi is looking to disrupt that part of the foldable market with its offering. The MIX Flip has all the things you’d expect from a flagship foldable except global availability, but somehow we think Xiaomi knows that the market is thirsty for a flagship-level flip that has sane pricing.

Xiaomi MIX Flip Quick Review: Design and Display

The Xiaomi MIX Flip doesn’t deviate from the established design cues that its competitors have already set and instead offers refinements to the status quo. The front of the device, when folded, is dominated by a large, 4.1-inch cover display that overlaps the two camera modules. This cover display is bright, hitting 3200nits of max brightness, though typical use will see it hover around 1600nits.

You can use different apps on the cover screen and even type on it if you need to, though the keyboard that shows up is very small, especially if it’s someone like me using it. Xiaomi did add clever tricks to the phone’s outer display capabilities, like being able to access navigation apps while it’s closed as well as being able to answer calls without having to open it (thanks to the external microphone on the cover).

Xiaomi says that they’ve put their toughest glass protection yet on the outer display, dubbed Xiaomi shield glass since they recognize the fact that trying to replace a broken display on one of these things is a very expensive affair.

The inner display on the other hand is 6.86 inches big, has an LTPO OLED panel, and has a dynamic refresh rate of up to 120Hz to conserve power, as well as 2160 PWM dimming. overall display quality is good, though you can still see the crease in the middle – it’s just something you’re going to have to live with when you’re using a foldable.

The MIX Flip is a little thicker than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 but not by much. The biggest con here for the design is that it’s not IP-rated, so you’re going to have to keep it away from the elements as best you can.

Xiaomi Mix Flip Quick Review: Cameras

The Xiaomi MIX Flip uses two 50-megapixel cameras at the rear – specifically a 50-megapixel main sensor with OIS and 50-megapixel telephoto lenses. While Xiaomi didn’t confirm it, these cameras are very likely the same sensors used in their Xiaomi 14 flagships released earlier this year. As with everything high-end coming from Xiaomi, these cameras also bear Leica branding and can shoot images in either Leica vibrant or Leica authentic.

Photos taken with the cameras are impressive, though we’ve only had a day with them so we can’t say how well they do in more challenging situations. That being said, daylight samples had an excellent amount of detail, great highlights, and very respectable low-light performance.

Xiaomi Mix Flip Quick Review: Performance and Battery

his might be a smaller, more compact phone than Xiaomi’s larger book-type foldable, but it’s a powerful device in its own right. It has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, plus a relatively massive 4780mAh battery paired with 66W of fast charging. Xiaomi’s phone is just a few mAh short of the 5000mAh that’s standard on phones nowadays. The only drawback here as far as battery and charging goes is the fact that there’s no wireless charging, which is odd for a flagship phone.

As far as configurations go, base models start with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, with options going up as high as 1TB for the device.

The phone is powered by HyperOS and also comes with its suite of AI enhancements, though Xiaomi didn’t go into detail on what they did. Since we were only given a limited time with the phone (and the fact that it was equipped with a China ROM) we couldn’t get into the nitty-gritty of the functionality of the device.

Xiaomi Mix Flip Quick Review: Wrap-up and Initial Verdict

We didn’t spend a lot of time with the Xiaomi MIX Flip, but with the short time we did have we it, we walked away very impressed. It’s a shockingly well-built and well-thought-out device considering it’s the company’s first stab at a flip-style foldable, and the only hurdle for you, the customer from getting one is availability. It’s currently only for the Chinese market as of press time, but I’d be shocked if they don’t offer this internationally in the coming months.
