Packaging and contents

Like the Mi 3, the Redmi 1S comes in a plain brown box that bears the company’s logo on the front, and the phone’s specs on the back.

Once you open the minimalist box, you’ll see the phone itself, along with a small sheet of paper that acts as a quick user manual, a USB cable and a charger. Like the Mi 3, Xiaomi did not include headphones in the Redmi 1S.

Beefy, fast, affordable

When we picked up the Redmi 1S for the first time, we noticed just how beefy the thing is. The device certainly has some heft, which is reassuring, considering its mostly plastic construction. While the Mi 3 and Mi 4 looked streamlined and elegant, the Redmi 1S felt bulky and tough, especially with its thick bezels.

Both sides of the Redmi 1S are curved, and helps you get a solid grip on the device. The volume rocker and power button are on the right side, while the 3.5mm jack and the USB port are on the top and the bottom, respectively.

The back cover of the Redmi 1S is removable, revealing the two SIM card slots, as well as the microSD slot. People who like customizing their phones will be happy to know that Xiaomi will be selling aftermarket covers and protectors for the Redmi 1S (again, through Lazada).

The Redmi 1S packs a 1.6GHz quad-core MSM8228 Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, paired with 1GB of RAM. The Redmi 1S is the cheapest smartphone in the Philippines to come in this configuration (most Snapdragon 400 processors here run at a slower 1.2GHz), which obviously results in high synthetic benchmarks, as evidenced by its AnTuTu score. Like any of Xiaomi’s smartphones, the Redmi 1S packs the company’s MIUI overlay, though the phone is running on Android 4.3.

If you’re interested in the Redmi 1S, take note that it will go on sale in Lazada come September 4, at 12 noon for a super affordable price of Php 5,599.
