Xiaomi Surprises Everyone with the CyberDog Quadruped Robot

If the Mi MIX 4 and Mi Pad 5 series are not enough to wow the crowd, Xiaomi pulled off a “one more thing” by unveiling the CyberDog. The open-source quadruped robot is a mechanical pet that resembles Boston Dynamics’ Spot but with a beefier build to showcase Xiaomi’s engineering expertise, which includes proprietary servo motors.

The brain of the CyberDog is an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX, which is touted as the world’s smallest AI Supercomputer. The Jetson Xavier NX has 384 CUDA cores, 48 Tensor cores, six Carmel CPU cores, and two deep learning cores. Xiaomi’s custom-developed servo motors help the CyberDog perform tricks like backflips and move fast at up to 11.5km/h. Yes, it is one fast robot dog.

The CyberDog has a total of 11 sensors that include touch and ultrasonic sensors, cameras, and GPS to make it interact well with the environment. All of those sensors help the CyberDog to follow its owner, avoid obstacles, and track human faces. Among its key sensors is an Intel RealSense D450 depth sensor, which aids in object tracking and obstacle avoidance

Aside from having a variety of ports that include three USB-C ports and an HDMI port, the CyberDog responds to verbal calls by using wake words. That being said, you can set voice commands to it, along with support for all popular voice assistants out there. With all those ports, along with being open-sourced, the main audience of the CyberDog is for “Xiaomi fans, engineers and robotics enthusiasts to jointly explore the immense possibility of CyberDog.”

That being said, Xiaomi will be only selling 1,000 CyberDogs for CNY 9,999(~Php 77.8k). Xiaomi also plans to kick off an open-source robotics developer community for the CyberDog for enthusiasts to develop and craft new innovations for the robot dog.

Right now, there is no word yet if Xiaomi will make the CyberDog available to the public.
