BYD’s Dolphin Mini EV is as Affordable as a Wigo

We recently tried out the BYD Dolphin, and we’re impressed that it can do a roadtrip to Subic on a single charge. But what if you just want an EV for purely city driving? BYD announced globally the Dolphin Mini globally, which is a smaller version of the one we drove, but has a shockingly low starting price of $9700 or around Php 550,000 before taxes and duties.

Factoring in taxes and duties, the Dolphin Mini will have a price that’s close to a Toyota Wigo, which has a starting price of Php 609,000 for the base variant. Even with taxes and duties factored in, the Dolphin Mini is even more affordable than BYD’s Qin Plus EV, which also has an under Php 1 million price tag.

As the name implies, the Dolphin Mini is a smaller version of the one we have in the Philippines, which also means a smaller battery. BYD will be offering the Dolphin Mini with either a 30.08kWh or a 38.88kWh battery. The former is rated for 305km, while the latter is rated for 405km.

Despite being a smaller version of the Dolphin we have in the Philippines, the Dolphin Mini still has a trendy interior that includes a 10.1-inch display for controlling most of the functions and a minimalist set of controls in the center.

There’s no word if BYD has plans to bring the Dolphin Mini to the Philippines, but they will give the local EV scene serious competition if they manage to price it at under Php 700,000.
