Here’s Why Converge is Not Getting into Mobile Services

After Converge signed an assets-sharing deal with DITO early this year, there were rumors that this might mean Converge expanding into the mobile business. This rumor has been going on for months, and Converge CEO Dennis Anthony Uy has set the record: they will only focus on fiber internet services.

“Honestly, there’s no such country that is making money [or] becoming profitable yet on 5G,” Uy explained during the 4Q FY2023 Results Briefing with Media. “Right now, even 4G is not yet fully penetrated in the country.”

In Uy’s explanation, he adds that there are still users that are on the 2G or 3G network and that the use of 5G is still concentrated in major cities.

The decision of Converge to not expand to mobile networks and focus on its fiber internet business does make sense: in its 4Q FY2023 briefing, they explained the continuous expansion of its BIDA Fiber and Surf2Sawa services, where the former now covers over 700 municipalities, while the latter covers over 600 municipalities.
