Converge User Info Compromised By Data Breach

In the digital world, users can’t be too careful about how they handle their personal information. Theft, crimes, and scams can occur on a much grander scale nowadays. Even if the world’s largest corporations invest tons of money into cybersecurity, they can still get hacked. A piece by PhilStar recently confirmed that Converge was hit by a data breach.

The company had been quick to report the breach to the National Privacy Commission the moment they had discovered the crime. They had also been swift in informing their subscribers that personal information such as full name, birthdate, maiden name of mother, email address, mobile number, and other tidbits may have been stolen from their servers.

It definitely takes a lot of transparency to admit that their online defenses have been broken down. However, this was a good move for Converge since it is likely that scammers will be reaching out to these subscribers disguised as official company representatives. If this were to happen and unsuspecting customers were to get fooled, then they’d have even more reason to be furious.

According to Converge, only a small portion of their customer base had been affected by this data breach. Nonetheless, they are conducting investigations to get to the bottom of this as well as fortifying their current security measures to prevent a reoccurrence. They’ve also apologized to everyone affected and the general public.

“Since the discovery of this event, we, together with our accredited third-party developer, have implemented additional validation in the system to address the security breach and to strengthen the GoFiber app security. By doing so, users of the GoFiber app are assured that only they can retrieve account information linked to their registered account.”

While this entire incident is unfortunate, we’re happy to see a critical situation like this being handled very professionally. That’s what we’ve come to expect from the Netflix-awarded best Philippine ISP for 2021. We just hope it doesn’t happen again.
