Lenovo Dreams of a World Where Phones Are Worn on Wrists

Lenovo revealed many things on the first day of its ongoing Tech World 2023 event in Austin, Texas. The highlight was the reveal of the company’s partnership with Nvidia, which aims to provide enterprises with hybrid AI solutions. While it is part of Lenovo’s larger, comprehensive “AI for All” vision, what really caught our eyes was this: a rollable phone concept that Lenovo subsidiary Motorola thinks should be put on your wrist like a bracelet.

To recall, Motorola unveiled a similar prototype during the 2016 edition of Lenovo Tech World, but this newer one was seemingly more mature than that. For one, this newer bendable phone was able to do more poses than its predecessor within less than two minutes, The Verge reported.

“This new conceptual device uses an FHD+ pOLED display that can be bent and shaped into different forms depending on users’ needs. This adaptive display concept further builds upon the display and mechanical innovations from our foldable and rollable devices in both the smartphone and PC categories,” Lenovo said in a press release.

Providing more details on the latest prototype, Lenovo claimed the 6.9-inch display on it “runs a full Android experience, just like any smartphone.”

Motorola’s newest iteration now rocks an orange fabric chassis as well, but the change didn’t make the phone look any more comfortable to wear. That might be one reason why Lenovo didn’t allow members of the media to try the prototype out in addition to seemingly lacking the full range of functions that regular smartphones can do.

While quirky and interesting, it’s unclear if Motorola’s concept of a rollable smartphone will ever come to market as an actual product. We wouldn’t cross out the possibility, though, as the rise in popularity of foldables worldwide showed that there can be a demand for unproven devices even if they are still being developed.
