Meta Testing Community Chats in Facebook Groups: Goodbye Discord?

You might be dropping Discord in the near future, as Meta confirms that they are working on a community chats feature for Facebook groups. In their post about it, Meta is basically bringing Community Chats to Facebook Groups by utilizing Messenger and doing things you’d normally do in Discord: start chats and engage members in audio channels, connect to communities in real-time through text, audio, or video, and organize chats into categories for better management of messages. All of these are done through Facebook’s Messenger platform.

“The experience seamlessly blends Messenger and Facebook Groups to allow people to connect when, where, and how they want.”

From the way how Meta describes its latest project, it seems that they want Messenger to be an all-in-one communications platform that goes beyond using it to talk with friends and family. Meta envisions Messenger as a potential rival to the likes of Discord, offering real-time communication to group members.

Given the scope of Community Chats for Facebook Groups, Meta is also working on a suite of tools to help administrators moderate and manage members for a pleasurable experience that’s free from the toxicity of social media as much as possible.

The feature is currently being tested, and Meta has yet to give a timeline when it will make it available for all users.
