Musk Wants X To Become A Paid App

Elon Musk is potentially mulling over a drastic change for X, formerly Twitter, that could affect how everyone will use the platform in the future: he wants his microblogging site to become a paid app, essentially charging everyone using it a monthly subscription fee.

Speaking to, of all people, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a live-streamed conversation, Musk said that X becoming a paid app is the only way to combat “vast armies of bots” on the platform.

“Because a bot costs a fraction of a penny — call it a tenth of a penny — but even if (a bot maker) has to pay a few dollars, the effective cost of bots is very high,” Musk said.

Changing into a paid service would counteract that problem, as anyone trying to set up bots would have to pay multiple times to effectively create a bot network.

But Musk’s approach to solving the bot problem has the potential to backfire as people are generally opposed to the idea of paying for social media access. Add to that Twitter’s long list of blunders and Musk’s tendency to implement new features and ideas half-baked, you can see why there’s a potential for catastrophe here.
