While Netflix did a price cut on the Basic and Standard Plans in the Philippines last February 2023, it seems they will do another shakeup with their current set of tiers. Recently, multiple news outlets like The Verge and Mashable reported that users under the Basic Plan of Netflix are getting a notification that their subscription will end on July 13. “Choose a new plan to keep watching,” the notification states.
With this notification, all users who are still under the Basic Plan have two options: downgrade to Netflix’s ad-supported Plan or upgrade to the Standard Plan.
This does not come as a surprise, as Netflix has started to not offer the Basic Plan in several countries like Canada, the UK, and the US. Those who were still under the Basic Plan were allowed to keep it–as long as they didn’t cancel their subscription.
With Netflix sunsetting its Basic Plan, it’s a matter of time before the Philippines will no longer have the Basic Plan–forcing Filipinos to choose between the Mobile-only plan or the Standard Plan. Should Netflix give the axe to the Basic Plan in the Philippines, it should not be bad for its subscribers–for Php 150 more, you get a higher streaming resolution at 1080p (which is the de facto for the majority of devices), along with being able to download shows on two separate devices.
However, Netflix plans in the Philippines may become more expensive soon with the Senate finaling the bill imposing taxes on digital services.
