Aside from earlier reports that the Philippines is behind the world average regarding internet speeds, the country is also behind in network excellence based on Opensignal’s Global Network Excellence Index.
The Global Network Excellence Index is a comprehensive ranking system that evaluates mobile markets worldwide by analyzing key Opensignal metrics that include 4G/5G Availability, Â Excellent Consistent Quality, and 4G and 5G download speeds.
In Opensignal’s ranking for network excellence, the Philippines is in 72nd place, making it behind several Asian countries. For comparison, Thailand and Indonesia ranked 62nd and 58th respectively, while Vietnam and Malaysia ranked 45th and 37th respectively. Singapore is in the 15th spot, while Taiwan is ranked 7th.
Looking at download speeds, the average for 4G in the Philippines is 23.1Mbps, and for 5G it is 150.1Mbps. While this means that the Philippines trails behind Japan’s 153.6Mbps, it is lagging in terms of 4G speeds–closely trailing Thailand, which has average download speeds of 23.6Mbps.
These findings show that the Philippines needs to catch up when it comes to mobile connectivity, which is important especially since Filipinos have one of the longest internet usage times with an average of 8 hours and 52 minutes a day across various devices.
Telcos are improving their services lately: aside from 5G Home WiFi offerings, they are also focused on upgrading their 5G infrastructure–something Smart and TNT have been doing with their 5G Max service.
