While Smart was recently hailed as the fastest 5G network by Ookla, the internet testing leader recently hailed PLDT as the fastest broadband provided in the Philippines for Q1 2021.
In Ookla’s latest report, PLDT has increased its lead for average download speeds in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Western Visayas, Davao Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Ilocos Region, Soccsksargen, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Caraga, MIMAROPA, and ARMM.
“PLDT has been aggressively expanding our fiber network footprint nationwide, which has been key to the massive and consistent improvement of our internet speeds,” Senior Vice President and PLDT Home Business head Butch Jimenez said.
Aside from an impressive Q1 2021 performance, PLDT bagged the highest Speed Score at the Ookla Speedtest awards for both 1st half and 2nd half of 2020, attaining scores of 24.79 and 27.28 respectively. It is also the most powerful fiber-to-the-home network in the country ads it offers up to 1000Mbps download and upload speeds. As for its fiber network footprint, PLDT currently has 478,000 kilometer lines as of Q1 2021 and continues to expand its network further to accommodate over 3.9 million (and growing) subscribers.

As for future upgrades, PLDT commits to Php 73 billion for expanding its services this year, and aims to reach the minimum average broadband speeds of 30Mbps. It is also working on a new cable system that is expected to be finished by the end of this year. Called the Jupiter Submarine Telecommunications cable system, the said infrastructure should help PLDT to increase its internet speeds to match that of our neighboring countries. It is also important for internet resiliency as well, as it gives PLDT additional cable networks to use in case one of their major cable networks need repair or experience downtime.
