Philippines Trails Behind Vietnam in SEA Mobile Internet Experience

The Philippines still has a lot to work on in improving internet speeds–especially for mobile. Opensignal has released a report detailing about mobile internet experience, and the Philippines is trailing behind across almost all of their metrics. Starting with the most obvious, the Philippines has the least consistent mobile internet experience with 52.4% excellent consistency and 73.2% core consistency.

That’s quite a shame when compared to neighboring country Vietnam, where they posted a 65.9% excellent consistency and 80.9% core consistency. Vietnam’s consistency score makes them the best in the SEA region, rivaled by Thailand.

For a better understanding of consistency metrics, Excellent Consistency refers to the percentage of users’ tests that met the minimum recommended thresholds for users to watch HD video, complete group video conference calls, and play games, while Core Consistent focuses on lower-performance applications including SD video, voice calls, and web browsing.

Among the countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam handily beats its neighbors in both video and games experience, scoring 51.5 and 70.4 respectively. The Philippines is far behind, only scoring 38.8 in video experience and 47.7 in game experience. This places the Philippines in the Poor (40 to 65) category for both video and games experience, as users did not have a good experience even with low-resolution videos and have difficulties with multiplayer mobile games. Opensignal cites slow loading times and frequent stalling as the factors for a poor experience.

Another metric that showed how far behind is mobile internet in the Philippines compared to Vietnam is with download and upload speeds. While we boast 16.7Mbps download and 3.7Mbps upload speeds, Vietnam dominates by a big margin with 26.2Mbps and 8.8Mbps upload speeds.

While these metrics will make us dismayed about the state of mobile internet in the Philippines, both READ MORE and Smart are making strides in improving its connectivity that includes aggressively upgrading its infrastructure for 5G networks.
