Cancel Culture SHIELD: New Edit Tweet Option On Twitter

Cancel Culture SHIELD: New Edit Tweet Option On Twitter

There seems to be a trend nowadays that has somehow sprouted alongside cancel culture. It’s to dig up Tweets from a decade ago and view them from the lens of today’s social norms, leading to public scrutiny. However, there may just be a way to prevent this without “dirty deleting.” Say hello to a new feature in development for Twitter – the Edit Tweet button.

Testing for this latest feature has been rather public as of late. Twitter users have been asking for the ability to edit old tweets for years now, and it seems like they’re finally taking these requests seriously. As seen in the photo, the official Twitter page is the account that’s posting these, giving legitimacy to the future of the platform. You may finally be able to save yourself from the embarrassment of former posts.

There’s a catch though. People will be able to see when your Tweet was last edited when they open it up. Whether this can be seen or not before actually clicking on the post is still up in the air, but for now, it isn’t. That will make it difficult for people stalking your account over thousands of Tweets in past years to dig up incriminating evidence. Another side-feature many users seem to be inquiring about is the ability to view Edit History; what was said in the Tweet before it underwent the Edit Tweet feature, much like how Facebook does it. Can you edit tweets from before this feature’s inception? We’ll see.

This could change the game entirely.

New and exciting features have been announced for Twitter in the last months. We have Twitter Circle which works like a “Close Friends” feature on Instagram. Some are even saying that Twitter is copying its fellow social media giants’ homework. If this leads to a better experience on the platform though, then we’re all for it.

There are rumors that this Edit Tweet function on Twitter may come first to paid Twitter Blue subscribers. That is the point of the service anyways: to provide exclusive access to the latest and cutting-edge of the platform.

Regardless, this is a splendid way to draw attention away from the internal and external turmoil that has plagued the platform as of late. This could possibly encourage more people to stay on the service despite its flaws and current issues. We’ll have to wait and see whether if it works or not.
