Shopee urges its users to be vigilant amidst the rise of task and prize scams, where fraudsters use deceptive tactics to unsuspecting individuals through SMS and messaging apps.
Task and prize scams are two of the most common schemes that involve fraudsters impersonating representatives from notable brands like Shopee Mall or Shopee’s HR Recruitment Team–the latter luring victims with fake part-time or full-time job opportunities. These fraudsters assign simple tasks to gain victims’ trust before demanding monetary transfers.
Prize scams, on the other hand, involve sending messages with malicious links that entice users to claim an alleged prize or reward from a company-sponsored contest. These malicious links allow scammers to steal sensitive information like names, addresses, and bank details—potentially leading to phishing or other extortion cases.
Shopee urges all of its users to exercise caution when disclosing information and making online transactions. To stay safe against scams, Shopee emphasizes the following:
-
Shopee will never ask individuals to send money in exchange for employment. All opportunities are posted only on the official Shopee Careers page.
-
Shopee does not send links via SMS or messaging platforms for prize claims. Official contest winners are announced only within the Shopee app or on Shopee’s verified pages and channels.
-
Users are advised to practice due diligence and should never share personal information such as their name, address, age, contact number, or bank details with unknown senders. Other confidential information such as personal identification number (PIN), one-time password (OTP), and account passwords should also remain strictly private.
-
Users should always keep their transactions within the Shopee app. This ensures secure payments and communication lines, order tracking, and access to Shopee’s buyer protection.
