Sony Has Acquired Bungie, Studio Behind Destiny and OG Halo

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it has acquired Bungie, the game behind the original Halo games as well as the Destiny franchise for a cool 3.6 billion dollars.

After the acquisition is done, Sony says that Bungie will be “an independent subsidiary” of SIE run by a board of directors consisting of current CEO and chairman Pete Parsons and the rest of the studio’s current management team, which means they’ll still be producing games for different platforms, with the option “to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play.”

“Bungie has created and continues to evolve some of the world’s most beloved videogame franchises and, by aligning its values with people’s desire to share gameplay experiences, they bring together millions of people around the world,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, Chairman, President, and CEO, Sony Group Corporation. “As part of our Purpose to ‘fill the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology, we will utilize the Sony Group’s diverse array of entertainment and technology assets to support further evolution of Bungie and its ability to create iconic worlds across multiple platforms and media.”

The acquisition comes at the heels of competitor Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard, which sees the Redmond company pay 68.7 billion for the publisher.

Bungie started out as an independent studio before it was bought by Microsoft in June of 2020, which allowed them to secure its breakout title Halo as an Xbox exclusive when the platform first launched in 2001.

Bungie was able to acquire its independence back in 2007 after the launch of the third Halo game, before it signed a deal with Activision that led to the creation of their current IP, Destiny. The news that Sony has acquired Bungie has people wondering if the company has a new FPS title in mind, Bungie is known for making incredible FPS experiences.
