As we still wait for the day Spotify releases its ultra-premium HiFi tier to rival Apple Music, the music streaming platform has reportedly nerfed the features offered to free subscribers by removing the lyrics feature on songs.
While Spotify has yet to make a formal announcement on making lyrics a premium feature, TechCrunch said that Spotify only told them that “features can vary over time, between markets and across devices.” That statement implies that the change is currently at its testing phase, and that Spotify has yet to make it official in different markets.
According to some users to discovered the change, it seems that Spotify will limit the number of times non-paying users can view lyrics per month. Once users reach that limit, they will receive a message “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.”
There are no details why Spotify is doing this, but all points to the streaming platform finding ways to increase the number of paid users. While Spotify boasts over 600 million monthly active users, only less than half of those listeners are paying subscribers at around 236 million users. Aside from increasing the price of their premium subscription, Spotify also had to axe 1,500 employees to cut costs to improve the company’s finances.
