An “Autonomous Machine Processor” as they call it
NVIDIA has made its emphasis in creating AI tech during its press conference at CES 2018. In particular, they want to focus on the realm of self-driving cars. In fact, they have partners for this venture, which include Volkswagen, Aurora, ZF, Baidu, and even Uber. Of course, to make this possible, NVIDIA invested in billions of dollars in research and development to create a powerful SoC with the NVIDIA Xavier “Autonomous Machine Processor”.
Containing around nine billion transistors, the Xavier is claimed to be 15 times more efficient than the DRIVE PX 2, NVIDIA’s previous-generation SoC. Other features include an 8-core CPU, a 512-core Volta GPU, an 8K video processor, and deep learning and computer vision accelerators. Given the amount of tech it packs, the Xavier can deliver 30 trillion operations per second while consuming just 30 watts. That’s a lot of numbers to crunch, and the Xavier does it with ease.
In essence, the Xavier is NVIDIA’s effort towards streamlining the intelligent vehicle experience, improving how drivers and passengers interact with cars. These experiences include improving safety in cars, such as better collision prevention.
