Apple to Release More Efficient, Self-Made Batteries by 2025

Apple is supposedly developing next-generation batteries that are more efficient and more powerful than the ones currently available on the market.

The tech giant is planning to commercialize these new in-house batteries starting in 2025, South Korean media outlet ETNews reported. These batteries will then be installed in Apple products that are to be released following that year.

Apple has apparently become directly involved in the development of the battery’s materials. Specifically, the company has reportedly started to curate its battery’s anodes and cathodes – the things that determine a battery’s energy density, and output – with the aim of significantly improving performance. Apple has experimented with mixing metals such as nickel, cobalt, and aluminum to achieve its goal.

In addition to tinkering with anode and cathode materials, Apple is considering the use of carbon nanotubes to improve its battery’s performance. The company is also dramatically increasing silicon content in batteries to increase capacity as well as to shorten both charging and discharging times. If this is true then Apple may have found a way to overcome the issue of silicon expanding in volume during charge and discharge times.

As a result of all these innovations, Apple expects to create a new kind of battery that has not yet been commercialized around the world.

It’s unclear why Apple started to develop its own batteries, but it could be one of the company’s attempts to further decrease its reliance on third-party suppliers. Apple is known to have tapped into Samsung SDI, Sony, Amperex Technology Limited, and LG for its batteries.

What is apparent, however, is that battery technology will be further developed and pushed to its limits in the coming years with the continued rise of electric vehicles and other new technologies.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the incredible capabilities today’s batteries provide. If you’re currently on the hunt for a phone with great battery life, then you can check out some of our picks here.
