5 Compact Tablets Other than the iPad Mini

5 Compact Tablets Other than the iPad Mini

Apple offers the iPad Mini as its best compact tablet offering. But let’s face it. Not all of us want an Apple device to add to our everyday carry (EDC) especially if we are on a limited budget. So we decided to compile 5 alternate compact tablets that you can consider this 2024.

Before we start this list, our definition of compact tablets is those with a display size of 9 inches or less.  If you’re looking for the usual 11-inch tablets, you can check out our other list here.

Compact Tablets in the Philippines 2024

  • Galaxy Tab A9
  • Redmi Pad SE 8.7
  • realme Pad Mini
  • Cherry Aqua Tab S1
  • Amazon Fire 7 12th Generation

Galaxy Tab A9

Samsung is one of the few brands that still makes compact tablets, and the Galaxy A9 appears compelling. It’s powered by a Helio G99 processor with optional LTE connectivity, with the models sold in the Philippines having 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Despite being an entry-level device, this 8.7-inch tablet features a premium build and is only 8mm thick. Keeping the lights on is a 5100mAh battery.

The Galaxy Tab A9 starts at Php 8,990 for the WiFi-only 4GB/64GB model–though you can get it at a lower price if you’re lucky.

Redmi Pad SE 8.7

As the name implies, this tablet features an 8.7-inch display that has a 90Hz refresh. Introduced as the smaller brother of the Redmi Pad SE, this tablet features a sleek and simple design and has a very handy case that has a strap that doubles as a stand. The device is powered by a Helio G85 processor and comes with 4GB RAM and up to 128GB storage–along with optional LTE connectivity and a beefy 6650mAh battery.

The Redmi Pad SE 8.7 starts at Php 6,999 for the WiFi-only 4GB/64GB model.

realme Pad Mini

While this compact tablet is a bit dated (it launched back in 2022), realme still offers the Pad Mini in stores. This 8.7-inch tablet uses a Unisoc T616 processor that’s paired with up to 4GB RAM and 64GB UFS 2.1  internal storage. You get LTE connectivity with it, and it features a premium aluminum unibody–on top of being slim at 7.6mm while packing a 6400mAh battery.

The Pad Mini is priced at Php 8,179 for the 4GB/64GB model.

Cherry Aqua Tab S1

Cherry’s first tablet under the Aqua line qualifies as a compact tablet, as it has an 8-inch screen, making it ideal for slipping into your bag. Cherry’s offering comes with a UNISOC SC9863A processor paired with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage, which should be good for basic productivity. A 5100mAh powers it, and you get MicroUSB charging–which we wish it came with USB-C but it’s really hard to complain with a budget tablet.

The Aqua Tab S1 is priced at Php 5,999 at Cherry’s official stores.

Amazon Fire 7 12th generation

If you’re looking for a compact tablet for entertainment use (and perhaps to complement your Alexa ecosystem), Amazon’s Fire 7 is worth considering especially for its very affordable price tag. You may only get modest specs–quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage–this compact tablet has Alexa integration, making it a nice addition to your smart home if you’re using Amazon’s digital assistant.

You can get the Fire 7 12th generation for Php 3,595 at Datablitz.

That wraps up some of the compact tablets you can buy in 2024 in case you find an iPad Mini too expensive. Which of these compact tablets will you add to your EDC?
