Not Fold: OnePlus Confirms Open Foldable Branding

With most brands already have their own foldable device, they would often to use the Fold branding to refer to them. OnePlus, on the other hand, wants to spice things up by calling their upcoming foldable phone Open instead of the usual Fold.

Despite the unusual name that sounds rather weird for a phone, OnePlus does have a point: after all, foldable devices fold open when you want to reveal that large screen estate. It’s also worth noting that OnePlus made the reveal at a time when Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold5 with rather minimal upgrades.

The next question to OnePlus Open would be: how will they impress everyone? For one, the OnePlus Open is not going to be a rebranded Find N contrary to previous reports. However, the latest renders reveal the OnePlus Open to have a similar form factor to the Z Fold5—maybe they might have a surprise under their sleeve like an ultra slim profile when folded?

As of its alleged specs, the Open is expected to use a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 processor, along with an 50-megapixel IMX890 main camera and a 32-megapixel OV32C selfie camera on the cover display. It will be better than the Galaxy Z Fold5 with its reportedly larger 4800mAh battery that has support for 100w SuperVOOC charging.

As for its display, the Open will reportedly have a 6.3-inch AMOLED cover screen that has a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a 20 MP selfie camera. The main screen, on the other hand, will reportedly be a 7.8-inch LTPO AMOLED panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate.

OnePlus is expected to unveil the Open this August in New York, so we expect to hear more surprises from them in the coming days.
