Xiaomi Overtakes Apple for Top 2 Spot in Global Smartphone Market

It is all good for Xiaomi this 2021, as the Chinese brand officially overtakes Apple for the second spot in global smartphone shipments based on the Q2 2021 report of Canalys.

In its report, Canalys praised Xiaomi, citing that the Chinese tech brand has transformed itself from challenger to incumbent. Following its recent efforts of overtaking Apple in global smartphone shipments, grabbing 17% of the market share for Q2 2021 with an impressive 83% YoY growth.

To recap, Xiaomi reached 43.4 million units with 31.5% YoY growth in Q4 2020, overtaking Apple in the process. While Apple reclaimed the second spot in Q1 2021 due to the iPhone 12 series, Xiaomi managed to grab back the second spot in Q2 2021 thanks to multiple phone releases from the Redmi and POCO lines.

“All vendors are fighting hard to secure component supply amid global shortages, but Xiaomi already has its sights set on the next prize: displacing Samsung to become the world’s largest vendor,” Canalys said in its report. On the Q2 2021 report, Samsung has a slight lead over Xiaomi at 19% of the market share with 15% YoY growth.

Beyond being a market leader in the budget and mid-range segments, Xiaomi is making its mark in the flagship segment with the Mi 11 series, with vanilla Mi 11 being the first phone to debut with a Snapdragon 888 processor. Other industry firsts Xiaomi has achieved include the first phone with a 108-megapixel main camera with the Mi Note 10. Beyond these, Xiaomi has been a leader in innovation with technologies like 200w wired charging and Liquid Lens.
