HUAWEI Rains on Apple’s Parade with the First Tri-Fold Phone

If Apple’s iPhone 16 series launch is boring for you, HUAWEI has made everyone curious with the Mate XT, which is the first tri-fold to be available to consumers—in China at least.

The headline feature of the Mate XT is its complex dual hinge design that lets you enjoy a 10.2-inch display with a 3k resolution when fully unfolded. Fold it halfway, and you get a 7.9-inch display with a 2k resolution and fully folding it gives you a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display. Outside of its complex dual hinge design, the Mate XT even beats the Magic V3 as the thinnest foldable at only 3.6mm thick when fully unfolded.

The flexible display uses an LTPO OLED panel that has a 240hz touch sampling rate and 1440hz PWM dimming, and its made from multi-directional bending flexible materials to support the Mate XT’s dual hinge design. Despite being incredibly thin, you do get a sizeable 5600mAh battery inside (which we presume is split into multiple cells) that supports 66w wired and 50w wireless charging.

HUAWEI did not disclose the processor, but it’s safe to assume that the Mate XT uses a Kirin chip. You get 16GB RAM, and up to 1TB of storage. Being a flagship device, you get Huawei’s XMAGE imaging tech on its triple rear camera setup that consists of a 50-megapixel main camera with a f/1.4-4.0 aperture, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 12-megapixel periscope camera with 5.5x optical zoom. Selfies are taken care of by a rather ordinary 8-megapixel snapper.

Here’s the official price of the Mate XT in China:
  • 16GB/256GB – CNY 19,999(~Php 159k)
  • 16GB/512GB – CNY 21,999(~Php 175k)
  • 16GB/1TB – CNY 23,999(~Php 191k)

Given the complexities of its design, the Mate XT is very expensive–even more expensive than a high-end gaming laptop. There’s also a challenge with availability: while first sales in China will start on September 20, it remains to be seen if HUAWEI has any plans of making this groundbreaking tech available in other countries.
