Considering that the PlayStation 5 is turning 4 years old in a few months and stocks are much better compared to back in 2020, Sony made an unfortunate announcement: starting September 2, the PlayStation 5 will be around 19% more expensive, at least in Japan.
As confirmed by the PlayStation Blog in Japan, the standard PlayStation 5 will be priced at 79,980 Yen, which is an increase of 13,000 Yen or around Php 5k. The digital-only version is also getting the same price hike with a new price of 72,980 Yen. The price hike will also affect all PlayStation 5 accessories like DualSense Controllers, and even the PlayStatation Portal is also affected by the price hike.
As for why Sony Japan is increasing price, the only explanation it provided is that it is a “response to the harsh environment such as recent changes in the global economic situation.”
Given the announcement in Japan, it remains to be seen if the PlayStation 5 in other markets will be more expensive. To recall, Sony announced a price cut back in December 2023, where the old version of the PlayStation 5 got a discount of almost Php 7k.
Considering that the PlayStation 5 is almost 4 years old, with the Slim refresh unveiled last year, you might want to wait for the PlayStation 5 Pro as it might launch sooner than you expect.
