Redmi Note 12 Pro+ Beats Galaxy A54 in Camera Performance

With the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ set to arrive in the Philippines on April 13, everyone is probably wondering how good is the 200-megapixel ISOCELL HMX sensor used for the main camera. While the sensor is smaller than the ISOCELL HP1 used on the more expensive 12T Pro, the mid-range device pulled off a good fight, as it scored 113 in DxOMark.

How good is that score? The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ shares the same score as last year’s Xiaomi 12, and is six points higher than the Galaxy A54, which used a new 50-megapixel sensor. The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ is also a point above the Reno8, which used an IMX766 sensor and is more expensive as well.

While there’s not much to write about the Redmi Note 12 Pro+’s ultra-wide camera (which is the same 8-megapixel sensor we’ve seen on a number of Xiaomi phones), the 200-megapixel ISOCELL HMX sensor on the main camera did a spectacular job. DxOMark commends the Redmi Note 12 Pro+’s main camera for having a wide dynamic range when shooting in low light–a feat that you’d rarely see on a mid-range phone–and snappy autofocus speeds when taking video.

The Redmi Note 12 Pro+’s video performance is consistent with its photo performance, and its stabilization performance is great for a mid-range phone thanks to its built-in OIS. There’s still room for improvement though, as the main camera does not maximize its pixel-binning tech properly to deliver good zoomed-in shots.
