Vivo Unveils First Smartphone with In-Display Fingerprint Scanning at CES 2018

An innovative approach to fingerprint scanners

As promised, Vivo formally unveiled the world’s first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner at CES 2018. The phones on display are now capable of fingerprint unlocking with the sensor found behind the display thanks to technology by Synaptics. The new tech was developed with 18:9 displays in mind, giving smartphone users a better fingerprint scanner location compared to the rear-mounted fingerprint scanners found in competing 18:9 display phones.

How the in-display fingerprint scanner works.

As demonstrated in CES 2018, the fingerprint scanner appears on the display as a graphical UI should there be a need to use it—whether it is to unlock the phone, to authenticate purchases, or to securely log in to online accounts. Because the UI is invisible when not in use, users need not worry about accidentally activating the fingerprint scanner while the phone is in their bags or pockets.

Even if the fingerprint scanner is behind the display, Vivo assures that authentication is just as quick and secure as conventional fingerprint scanners.

Here’s a quick video of the in-display fingerprint scanner in action:

While Vivo did not mention the phone model that will be equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner, they said that the first in-display fingerprint scanner phones will come out in early 2018.
