GCash Turns 20: Here’s Why They Are No. 1

Time does fly, and GCash celebrates 20 years as a FinTech platform that’s among the most used by Filipinos. From its early days in the 2000s to now, GCash has evolved into an all-in-one app that handles all of your financial needs. As we look back, here are 20 fun facts about GCash in its 20 years of existence:

  • They started in 2004 as a money transfer service that’s done via SMS/Text.
  • They introduced mobile phone reloading in 2012.
  • 2012 also introduced GCash’s ability to pay bills
  • QR payments? Gcash was among the first to introduce that in 2017.
  • Doing identity verification (aka know-your-customer) electronically started in 2018 in the GCash app.
  • 2018 also saw the debut of GCredit in partnership with CIMB.
  • 2018 also introduced GScore to let users unlock more perks as they attain a higher score. Some of these perks include access to more lending products
  • GSave was also introduced in 2018, where GCash introduced a more accessible option for its users to make their hard-earned money grow.
  • GForest was introduced in 2019 as a means of encouraging users to plant virtual trees (that later become real ones) with every transaction.
  • Right during the pandemic in 2020, GInsure was introduced to users as an accessible way to health and life insurance.
  • 2020 also debuted GLife, effectively transforming GCash into a super app.
  • 2021 introduced GGives and GLoan as GCash’s other borrowing options for its users.

  • GCash make investing in stocks more accessible in 2023 with GStocks, where users can start with a minimum investment of Php 1,000
  • 2023 also introduced GCrypto as an accessible way for users to buy, sell, and trade different cryptocurrencies.
  • Beyond being an eWallet platform, GCash introduced its Visa debit card in 2023, which is accepted in over 200 countries.
  • It’s latest feature is GCash Overseas, where OFWs and Migrants can have their own GCash account even with a non-Philippine SIM.
