While both DICT and the Senate have rejected the need for an extension for SIM Registration beyond the April 26 deadline, there appears to be a SMALL chance that the government might change its mind and reconsider it.
DICT Sec. Ivan John Uy said over at ABS-CBN News Channel that they are expected to make the final decision when they will meet with Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. later at MalacaƱang.
āYes, weāll be discussing SIM registration, among others,ā Uy said. āThis is important and this is urgent because tomorrowās already the deadline, so we like to make some decisions once and for all.”
In an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel, Uy also promised that the DICT will immediately announce their decision after their meeting with Marcos.
Currently, only around half of the Philippines’ 164 million active SIM users have registered two days before the April 26 deadline.
Uy said that they have received reports and identified issues and concerns aired by telcos and users in the SIM registration processāall of which they will consider in assessing whether an extension is necessary. Under the SIM Registration Law, the government can extend the deadline anywhere between 60 to 120 days.
The DICT’s decision to delay the decision on SIM registration extension was effective according to Uy: in the past two weeks leading to the April 26 deadline, an average of over 1 million SIMs were registered per dayācompared to around 100,000 per day last month.
