From Spectacles, Snap Now Has its Own Drone with Pixy

Outside of Snapchat, Snap also has its share of hardware for aiding creators with their Snapchat content. Following the Spectacles (and its various iterations), Snap expands their hardware portfolio with their own drone called the Pixy.

The Pixy is not meant to go against more mainstream drones made by brands like DJI; instead, the Snap Pixy is more of a selfie drone. The Pixy is so simple to use that it doesn’t even come with a controller. Instead, controlling the Pixy is done using four preset flight patterns that can be activated with the touch of the button and lands at the palm of your hand.

Aside from the said button, you have a settings button in the middle and four motors inside the Pixy’s body. All of the footage taken using the Pixy can be transferred via Snapchat Memories. The app allows you to add effects like speed ramps, jump cuts, and 3D bounce, along with adding lenses and sounds before sharing the final output on Snapchat or elsewhere.

Looking at its technical specs, the Pixy is a very light drone at around 101 grams and can shoot 12-megapixel photos and 2.7k video at 30FPS. It does have an 16GB internal storage that Snap claims can store 100 videos and 1,000 photos, while the removable battery can do 5 to 8 flights (with one flight ranging anywhere between 10 to 20 seconds). The battery life is not as long as mainstream drones–but do remember that the Pixy is meant for short-form video content.

With a $230(~Php 12.1k) asking price (add $20 for an extra battery and a dual battery charger), the Pixy is a rather expensive piece of tech especially if its goal is to take selfies. However, the idea of having a drone that’s straightforward to use might appeal content creators in amping up their videos.
