Before boarding our plane to Hong Kong for our trip to Shenzhen, China, we were lent an OPPO Find X to document the trip. I tend to drop phones so I was pretty nervous about using this flagship device from the brand. The motorized cameras made me feel uneasy because in my head, they might stop working altogether at the slightest impact.
A Visit to The Factory
We rode a bus to OPPO’s factory in Dongguan to see how the Find X is made. The place was a lot larger than I imagined but of all the rooms that we visited, my favorite was the area where they tested the phone for durability.
Squeeze them.
And subject them to extreme temperatures and humidity.
It was stressful to watch an expensive phone being manhandled but it had to be done. Mobile devices are investments and we want them to last a really long time. The Find X units survived the test.
Humans are still involved in the process
Perhaps I’ve been watching too much scifi films and I expected everything to be fully automated without the need for human intervention. I was wrong. OPPO employs a lot of people to see to the quality of each mobile device.
I’m not about to drop the Find X lent to me on purpose but I’m somewhat assured that should an accident happen, it won’t just shatter into a million little pieces. Delicate as it seems, it is certainly tougher than it looks.
