US to Implement Auto Cash Refunds for Cancelled, Delayed Flights

Passengers who are affected by cancelled or delayed flights will soon receive cash refunds for these causes in the United States, along with checked bag fees for those that aren’t delivered within 12 hours for domestic flights or 15 to 30 hours for international flights. The new policy will also applies to other services like seat selection and in-flight internet if the airline fails to provide the service.

This new policy was issued by the Transportation Department under the Biden Administration last April 24 as a response to complaints about refunds since the COVID-19 pandemic. With the new policy, the United States wants to streamline when airlines should give refunds by defining significant delays as least three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Aside from automatic cash refunds for delayed and cancelled flights, the Transportation Department will also implement a rule where airlines and ticket agents should disclose upfront fees for checked and carry-on bags and canceling or changing a reservation. It also requires airlines to give passengers a guaranteed seat that they are not required to pay extra–though it does not stop airlines to charge extra for specific seats.

US President Joe Biden wants to implement these new rules over the next two years, and it remains to be seen if other countries like the Philippines will follow the same example.
