Free Rides Two Weeks on the New LRT-2 East Extension

After delays in its official opening, the new LRT-2 extension will be ready for the riding public by July 5. To make up for the delay, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that commuters will get free rides for the first two weeks of operations of the LRT-2 east extension project.

During the inauguration ceremony yesterday, the President asked the DOTR Chief to consider giving the public free rides for the first two weeks of operations of the new line extensions. And so, starting on July 5, commuters from Santolan to Antipolo and vice versa will be able to experience the new LRT-2 East Extension free of charge.

Free LRT-2 East Extension

Starting Monday, LRT-2 commuters headed to Pasig, Marikina, and Antipolo can now travel comfortably, conveniently, and faster through the new LRT-2 east extension.

The newly added LRT-2 stations, namely the Marikina-Pasig Station and Antipolo Station will allow the new line to accommodate up to 80,000 passengers. The rail extension line is a big help as it would cut travel time from Recto in Manila to Masinag in Antipolo, from the usual 3-hour travel time via road transportation down to 30-40 minutes via the LRT-2 new line extension.

President Rodrigo Duterte commended the efforts of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) under the supervision of DOTR Secretary Arthur Tugade for making the project a success despite problems and difficulties faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The president commended the team and said, “Your efforts and determination show that the government stops at nothing to carry on its mandate, to serve the people’s interest no matter the circumstances.”

On Monday, commuters will board a shuttle train that will take them from the line’s Antipolo Station to the Santolan Station and vice versa. During the line’s shuttle operations for the next two weeks, passengers will board at the Antipolo Station or at the Marikina-Pasig Station and alight at the Santolan Station. From the Santolan Station, passengers will transfer to another train that will take them to the Recto Station and vice versa.
