iPhone 13 Holds Resale Value Better Than Closest Android Competitor – Report

You may have noticed this by now — Apple’s iPhone 13 has really good resale value. That goes for any iPhone – they just don’t depreciate fast, unlike their Android competitors. SellCell, a leading second-hand phone market specialist, concluded that iPhone 13’s depreciation rate is only half of an equivalent high-end Android flagship like the Google Pixel 6.

Although Google Pixel 6 is not available in the Philippines, it is safe to say that the loss in value of other, comparable Android flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 would be similar. The iPhone 13 has been around for 3 months now, while Google Pixel has been around for only a month. The latter, just like most Android flagships, has a very impressive spec sheet, and it would stand to reason that its depreciation would be around the same as a top-end iPhone 13.

However, this doesn’t seem to be the case right now, especially considering the depreciation rate of both models. After three months, iPhones have shown depreciation of between 22.4% and 28.9% of their value (or 21.8% on average) while Pixel 6 models have recorded an average of 42.6% loss in value, which is twice as much as the iPhone in three times the time.

In addition, all models of the iPhone 13 are currently depreciating less and less, improving their resale value even more. This situation, according to SellCell, can be explained by the strong demand on the part of consumers and an insufficient supply due to the shortage of components.

Both the iPhone and Pixel 6 models have been affected by component shortages, just like all other brands in the market. This caused them to produce less than expected, resulting in an increase in demand in the market while production remains limited.

For SellCell, the iPhone 13 is the “Christmas gift that keeps on giving, with its value improving since initial depreciation post-launch.”  They also mentioned that Apple has nothing to worry about even early next year when Google starts shipping the Pixel 6 phones again.
