New Windows 11 Update adds Watermark to Unsupported Devices

Microsoft is currently rolling out the January 2023 update for Windows 11 to devices. While the update is expected to address bugs found in the OS, there’s reportedly a new update that’s going to annoy those who are using old hardware and running Windows 11 on unsupported devices.

Spotted by Windows Latest, it seems that Microsoft wants to remind users that run Windows 11 on old hardware that
system requirements are not met.

The said watermark, which says “System Requirements Not Met,” appears on the bottom right corner of the screen–the same location where you get notified if you are running an unactivated version of Windows. While not all users are getting the notification, some report that they are surprised to see the watermark despite using Windows 11 on their devices for more than a year.

A closer look at the said watermark.

One of the users who received the notification even elaborated that their laptop should have met the requirements for Windows 11 since Microsoft stated that they should have two or more cores–and that the user’s laptop was running a Core i7-6500U processor.

Gizmodo suspects that the uncalled-for watermark might be due to the TPM 2.0 chip that’s required before installing Windows 11. Microsoft did detail how to enable TPM 2.0 on Windows devices, adding that PCs shipped since 2016 should be capable of running it. However, not everyone wants to upgrade their computers just for a new operating system, and this new move of Microsoft further forces them to spend money on upgrading.
