Next-Gen Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Has Arrived: The Dream Foldable

The previous-generation Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold made waves around the industry back in 2020 as the “laptop that folds.” It successfully completed what the foldable smartphones have achieved in mainstream success, but on a much larger scale. Now, a follow-up has been introduced to carry on the spirit of the original but with improvements that make it a much more livable device.

Lenovo claims that the new ThinkPad X1 Fold is the world’s lightest 16-inch commercial laptop device that delivers versatility and power in one package. Despite the fact that it’s in a sleek and unique form factor, it can still hold its own as the primary PC in any workstation. A combination of customer feedback and innovation has led to impressive numbers: a 22% larger folding OLED display, 25% thinner chassis, and slimmer bezels all around to deliver a more premium experience. The aluminum frame complements the soft back fabric that is made of 100% recycled woven material.

Under the hood are Intel Evo 12th-gen Intel Core i7 processors paired with Iris Xe graphics. Up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM makes itself available for multitasking, which makes the Windows 11 experience that much smoother. A multitude of files can be stored in up to 1TB of SSD memory – which also leads to lightning-quick bootup speeds. In addition to that, the Intel Visual Sensing Controller (VSC) is an AI-powered chip focused solely on quality of life features – apart from Windows Hello security and a bevy of software tweaks to extend battery life.

Another offering that can be taken to boost productivity with the new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is an optional full-size ThinkPad backlit keyboard. This has the legendary TrackPoint and large haptic touchpad, which works both when attached and detached from the PC. This keyboard can magnetically attach to the bottom half of the display, converting this unique setup into a conventional 12-inch laptop arrangement.

The 16.3-inch display is an OLED panel that can not only fold, but also get remarkably bright at 600 nits. Colors also pop out thanks to HDR technology and Dolby Vision support where supported. Industry-renowned Wacom magnetic pens can also be specced with the device. Due to the bezels measured at just 10mm, a cinematic, borderless experience is more than possible. Putting this into your bag isn’t an issue as well since it is just 8.6mm unfolded and 17.4mm folded. It can be used in laptop mode, conventional landscape, or a portrait mode currently in development.

Despite its beautiful design and cutting-edge technology, durability was also one thing Lenovo kept as a focus for this innovative investment. It has military certification set at MIL-STD-810H for extreme conditions that you wouldn’t normally wave around your laptop in anyways.

“Creating the world’s first foldable PC was a major technological challenge. Improving on that is a real achievement. We want the next-gen ThinkPad X1 Fold to be the benchmark for premium productivity, creativity and enjoyment,” said Jerry Paradise, Vice President of Commercial Product Center, Intelligent Devices Group, Lenovo. “Our strong foundations in design, engineering, and exceptional partnerships with Intel, Microsoft, and countless others have helped us build a versatile engineering masterpiece. The new ThinkPad X1 Fold redefines a category we created.”
