Huawei’s Next Big Secret is a Software-Based GPU Enhancer

Claims to improve overall performance especially for games

When the Honor Play and Honor 9i was unveiled, both phone sport a new tech called GPU Turbo. Since both phones were marketed for gaming, a lotĀ of people were puzzled: How will a $10 Billion investment change the way Android smartphones are made?

As explained by Honor President Zhao Ming, GPU Turbo involves making micro adjustments within the GPU through a mix of hardware and software. Simply put, GPU Turbo aims to optimize all Huawei and Honor phones using Kirin processors by making algorithm adjustments at the core level.Ā You read that right: This tech does not necessarily need new hardware in order for it to work.

Huawei’s proprietary tech is meant to optimize supported Huawei and Honor phones to make good use of hardware and software resources without resorting to hardware stacking. As a result, GPU Turbo optimizes the overall performance of Kirin-powered phones while improving on overall battery consumption. It is similar to how Apple does it with their iOS devices, where an iPhone X runs things smoothly even with just 3GB RAM on board.Ā

Since GPU Turbo is exclusive to Huawei, the feature will be made available to a number of mid-range and flagship Huawei and Honor devices. Huawei’s Mate 10 series and the Honor View 10 will receive GPU Turbo via software update by this month, while the P20 series, Honor 10, andĀ Mate RS Porsche Design will receive it by July.

Other Huawei and Honor phones slated to receive GPU Turbo include the Nova 2i, P10 Series, Mate 9 Series, P20 Lite, Honor 9 Lite, and Honor 7X. We’re excited about this development from Huawei, and we can’t wait to see it work in the flesh.
