New Foldable Display Tech Tucks Twice: Forms An N

BOE Technology is a company that has been at the forefront of display panel technology for a while now. They’ve developed innovation after innovation: and now they’re back with a foldable display that tucks both inwards and outwards. This seems similar to what Microsoft patented just 2 months ago: view it in the skin here.

If the concept seems difficult to grasp, then we’ll put it in simple terms: it forms an N-shape when folded. Sources claim that the screen real estate is only 5.6-inches at its smallest, while 12.3-inches are immediately made available once the device stretches its legs.

In its tiniest form, the device is inevitably thicker. It looks like a sandwich from the side, with the 2 buns and even the filling. Interior hinges guide the device to smoothly undergo these processes a thousand times over.

There seem to be some particularly interesting use cases for the design. Some have foreseen the bottom part of the screen to act as a stand when folded, giving leverage for hands-free use for the top half.

This innovation on foldable display technology is all well and good, but we hope that issues concerning this type of device are soon fixed. This includes bubbling of displays, malfunctioning of hinges, and especially scratch-resistant screens. The last holds especially true since we can imagine a lot of friction between the 3 parts of the screen in transit.

Thankfully enough, this technology has evolved quite a bit in the past year or two. We saw the OPPO Find N’s hinges survive even a hardcore test involving gravel and rocks. People happily use the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip 3 on the daily. Projecting identical progress in the next few years, foldables might really just be the future of phones.
