Mobile gaming is eons past what it was just a few years ago. Competitive leagues and professional careers (whether competitive, casual streaming, or both) have emerged around this billion-dollar industry, with portable devices gaining the capability to run triple-A titles. As a result, the market for mobile gaming peripherals has also grown enormously. PlayStation wants a slice of the pie and partners with renowned mobile gaming controller company Backbone on the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition gaming controller for Apple iPhone.

Make no mistake, Backbone had already been producing their One controller before this collaboration. However, they’ve worked with the engineers at PlayStation in order to give the Backbone One some PlayStation 5 (PS5) vibes. That includes modeling the materials after the console (and its controllers) feel in the hand, as well as the overall minimalistic aesthetic and button placement. The face buttons are also transparent which is one of the PS5 DualSense controller’s more attractive features.

The release video premiered by both Backbone and PS showcases the One controller in action. A person can be seen playing Remote Play access games from his console, then moving on to popular mobile platform titles such as Genshin Impact and Call of Duty: Mobile. The controller is ready to take it all in and is the closest you can get to authentic portable PlayStation experience, since the PSP and PS Vita have all but disappeared.

A custom Backbone App will be built around this piece of hardware. The Backbone One – PlayStation Edition will be available in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, and the United Kingdom at launch, with more countries to follow.
