Google Unveils Android 12 Go Edition For Entry-Level Devices

In 2017, Google released the Go Edition for their Android devices. This software was intended to be much lighter, in order to bring the most essential software features to entry-level devices. With flagships starting to receive the latest and greatest Android 12, there is definitely a high barrier to entry with the hardware requirements it imposes. Fortunately, though, lower-end gadgets will still be able to update to the Android 12 Go Edition by the start of 2022.

With this update, Google claims that users will receive a faster, smoother, and safer user experience. To put it in quantitative metrics, the tech giant has promised a 30% decrease in load times for applications, with SplashScreen API optimization made available for app developers.

The new iteration of the software will also hibernate applications not used for a significant amount of time, and allow you to clean up files and restore them when needed for up to 30 days. The goal is to squeeze everything from storage, processing power, and battery life out of the usually lacking hardware found in devices within this bracket.

Android 12 Go Edition will also help you save on precious mobile data. Applications can be fully or partially shared with nearby devices using Google Play instead of having to download the application itself. These applications are also now being fed with approximate details of your location and not your exact coordinates, not only to save bandwidth but also to protect your privacy.

Speaking of privacy, Google has implemented an all-new Android 12 Go edition privacy dashboard that will show you which applications have access to certain permissions such as camera data, microphone feedback, files, and location usage. These can easily be granted and revoked at a touch of a button. Additionally, if the smartphone is used by multiple people, guest accounts are available which will restrict the usage and keep files safe from other users.

Considering that a significant chunk of the world can’t afford flagship technology, this is a good way to get Android in the hands of as many users as possible. The results are showing – over 500 manufacturers worldwide have launched more than 1,600 phone models equipped with Android Go even going for as low as $27, and these have seen mass adoption. As Google says: “Whether it comes with a high-definition or regular display, 4GB or 16GB of storage, or 3G or 4G support, there’s a Go edition device for everyone.”
