Selling Usernames is Twitter’s Latest Desperate Move

With X losing a lot of money ever since Elon Musk took over, the cash-strapped social media platform is looking for ways to generate revenue. Aside from the usual advertising, X offers different subscription tiers that include an “I’m not a Bot” subscription for new users in the Philippines and New Zealand. X is so desperate for cash, Forbes reports that Musk signaled a program to sell inactive Twitter usernames.

According to Forbes‘ sources, there is a @Handle team that’s working on creating a marketplace for these inactive usernames. What’s insane is that X is asking for $50,000 or around Php 2.8 million for some old Twitter usernames.

X defines inactive usernames as those who haven’t logged in for the past 30 days. Despite those reported plans, X cannot release inactive usernames for the time being according to its Help Center.

We don’t know how X prices these inactive usernames, but paying close to Php 3m for one that you can call your own is overly extravagant.

While the news may come as a surprise to everyone, Musk has been planning this as early as November 2022 in its push to reduce bots and trolls on the platform. According to reports from January of this year, Musk plans to free up as many as 1.5 billion Twitter usernames. We don’t know how Musk came up with that figure, as  DemandSage said that there are only 1.3 billion Twitter accounts as of 2023, with only around 237.8 million of them being active daily.
