Acer Announces 2022 Chromebook Line With Latest MediaTek Chipset

Technology company Acer showcased a lot of their up-and-coming tech at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022. Included in their announcements was the Acer Chromebook Line for 2022, composed of three unique laptops running the Google OS. Here are the models that make up the lineup.

Leading the pack is the Chromebook Spin 513, which is the most expensive on this list starting out at $599 (USD). According to 9-to-5-Google, the device flaunts a convertible form factor that allows the 13.5-inch 3:2 aspect ratio display to be used as a laptop or a tablet. A report on Android Authority saw Acer’s claim that this Spin 513 will be built with their in-house military-grade aluminum, tested in numerous environments for proof of sturdiness.

Ports onboard include USB Type-A 3.0 and C connectors and a microSD card slot. Powering the convertible is the MediaTek Kompanio 1380, which will be the octa-core chipset’s maiden debut and the latest in the MediaTek Kompanio 1000 series. We’ll have to see how it performs and if the overall package can live up to the Spin 713‘s reputation.

These two Chromebooks are similar, only differing by minor aesthetic changes and screen size at 14-inches for the 314 and 15.6-inches for the 315. These are budget options that sacrifice certain specifications as well as the convertible form factor for a conventional laptop design to keep the price down to $299 (USD).

Despite some cost-cutting, these Acer Chromebook 2022 models still feature USB-C Gen 2 ports, a flare-reducing webcam, WiFi 6 and 8GB of RAM. The screen up front sports a respectable 1920×1080 resolution as well, albeit following the conventions of 16:9 aspect ratios.

As expected at the price point, Intel’s entry low-power Celeron chips will be doing the processing for these clamshells, with options being the Celeron N4500, N5100, or N6000 depending on the variant – according to a report by Chrome Unboxed. While some may scoff at these processors, these are on par with recent Core i3 chips or even i5 and i7 chips from a few generations ago. In addition to the decent hardware, it is known that Chrome OS is light to run and could play a role in the overall smoothness of the device.
