Will Qualcomm PC CPUs Compete With Apple’s M-series Chips?

With Apple’s M series of chips setting blazing-fast records on benchmarks while balancing maximum power efficiency, they have asserted themselves as the golden standard. It’s not only industry giants Intel and AMD that have taken notice. Qualcomm, better known for its industry-leading mobile processors, has decided to make another effort to produce a PC CPU worthy of taking on the almighty M1.

A significant step Snapdragon has taken towards this end goal is the acquisition of Nuvia, a CPU research and innovation firm, earlier this year. As mentioned in their press release, the USD $1.4 billion acquisition is a milestone because “NUVIA CPUs are expected to be integrated across Qualcomm Technologies’ broad portfolio of products, powering flagship smartphones, next-generation laptops, and digital cockpits, as well as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, extended reality, and infrastructure networking solutions.”

At the recently-concluded Qualcomm Investor Day, Qualcomm CTO Dr. James Thompson reveals that the company’s aim is to lead the industry with an unparalleled power-to-efficiency balance, to create the ultimate series of CPUs.

They don’t intend to get left behind in the field of gaming either, stating their intent to give their Adreno processor packages the capabilities to compete against desktop-grade performance. He also added that benchmarks don’t hold significant meaning if only done once; processors should gain more recognition from maintaining consistent results even after repeated testing.

Testing for their all-new processors is estimated to begin in around 9 months, so we’ll have to see the numbers before we make any assumptions. If we have anything to go by as of the moment, it’s Qualcomm’s first attempt at a PC CPU with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx – a processor for ultrathin laptops which had a production run from late 2019 to early 2021. While many raved about its impressive battery efficiency, its performance left much to be desired.
