No, The LTO Isn’t Allowed To Confiscate Vehicle License Plates

If you’re a motorist in the Philippines, then there’s a high chance that you’ve been pulled over by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) at one point in time. There are a multitude of violations, fines, and penalities that you can get apprehended for – so it can quickly get very confusing. But the LTO reminds road users that regardless, vehicle license plates cannot be confiscated under any circumstances.

Depending on the severity of the violation, one’s driver’s license can be flagged down – or the vehicle itself can even be impounded if deemed necessary. However, these materials can only be flagged if the relevant penalties can’t be immediately administered to the violator/s on the spot.

In cases wherein the vehicle cannot be impounded, the LTO reiterates that confiscation of license plates is not an option. That’s why be sure to remember this the next time an enforcer tries to take it away from you.

But that’s if you have your LTO license plates to begin with. The agency claims there’s still a humongous backlog, encouraging the proposal of unusual solutions such as DIY “registered” plates.
