What We Know About the Dimensity 9400 & Snapdragon 8 Gen 4

In comparing flagship chips, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 is very close to what the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has to offer. Early tests of the Dimensity 9300 revealed throttling issues, but this has been resolved despite MediaTek’s ambitious idea of not putting any efficiency cores.

With all the rumors about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400, it seems that both Qualcomm and MediaTek will go head-to-head once again in the flagship chip segment.

To start things off, early reports on the Dimensity 9400 indicate that MediaTek will still not use any efficiency cores and will replace one of the Cortex-X4 cores with a yet-to-be-announced Cortex X5 prime core. MediaTek CEO Cai Lixing gave early hints about the Dimensity 9400, stating that it will be made using TSMC’s 3nm mode (the same node as the Apple A17 Pro) and will launch by the fourth quarter of 2024.

As for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, we can expect it to be also made using a 3nm process and use custom Oryon cores. While MediaTek will reportedly still stick to not using any efficiency cores on the Dimensity 9400, Qualcomm is looking to push the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 to run at 4.0Ghz for its prime core. If true ,that will be the highest clock speed on any mobile chip.

Aside from those details, other reports also indicate significant performance gains for both the Dimensity 9400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 compared to their predecessors, which would be interesting to see how both flagship chips will perform in real-life tests—and how they can ensure that thermals and power efficiency will be well-managed.
