Samsung Patents Full-Screen In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

The patent gives flexibility in the location of the fingerprint sensor

As Samsung continues to introduce new innovations to catch up with the competition, the South Korean company submitted a patent for a different approach to in-display fingerprint scanners.

Current phones with in-display fingerprint scanners have a small window at one part of the phone’s display—usually near the bottom portion of the display—that houses the fingerprint sensor. In Samsung’s patent, the fingerprint scanner is the whole display itself. Instead of a small window, users can, theoretically, register their fingerprint at any part of the phone’s display.

To make this possible, Samsung’s patent indicates the use of two processors—one of them being a low-power processor that controls the biometric, touch, and lighting sensors. Once a fingerprint is detected at any part of the display, the said processor will do three scans before properly authenticating it.

There’s no word as to when Samsung will implement this feature, but expect them to introduce it to their mid-range phones first if we follow recent trends.
