Nice Wireless Compact Speakers from Sony
While we were in Malaysia for the Sony Xperia Z1 launch we dropped by the Sony store in one of the malls there to see if they had any good accessories available. We stumbled upon a pretty good one — the Sony Wireless Speakers SRS-BTV5. This product is actually available already in the Philippines but we’ve been holding off buying one since local stores in malls have been selling it for more than Php4,500. We ended up buying one in Malaysia because they were just selling it for roughly Php2,600-Php2,800, much cheaper than the price in malls here in the Philippines.
We’ve been using the speakers in our hotel room and eventually in the bedroom back in Manila for a few days now. We’d like to share with you guys a quick review.
Easy to Connect
The main draw of these speakers, other than being compact, is the ease of connection. All you have to do is download the Smart Connect App on the Google Play store, turn on NFC on your phone, turn on the speakers, and then tap them together and NFC will activate Bluetooth on your phone and connect it to the speakers. Definitely convenient, fun, and easier than doing the usual pairing. Note though that if your phone doesn’t have NFC you can pair the usual way by navigating through Bluetooth commands on your phone.
After connecting you can start playing your music through the speakers. When you get a call the speakers also has a built-in microphone so you can just talk to whoever is on the other line on it. It’s actually a nice accessory to have especially at home or in the office.

In terms of sound quality the SRS-BTV5 delivers respectable audio quality given it’s small and compact size. It’s not audiophile level but it’s still good considering your other wireless options out there in the same price range. These speakers are really meant for portability and convenience without sacrificing volume and power. If that’s what you’re looking for then this is definitely something you should consider.
By the way, inside the box there’s also a mesh pouch that you can use. Just put in the speakers in it if you’re not using ’em and stuff it in your bag. Nice that Sony put that in as a freebie!
Maybe Too Pricey Locally?
If this was priced the same in the Philippines like in Malaysia then this would be a good value buy. However stores here in the Philippines are selling it for over Php4,500 which is just crazy since you can get much better bluetooth speakers already at that price range. The cheapest seller we found was Widget City who sells it for Php3,590. At that price it’s much more acceptable but of course the best one is still the Php2,600-Php2,800 in KL, Malaysia, hehe.
