While Casetify is one of the biggest phone case brands in the world, it just landed itself in hot water: Dbrand filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Casetify for blatantly copying their teardown skin collab with YouTuber JerryRigEverything.
You see, JerryRigEverything is known for testing the durability of phones and dissecting them. JerryRigEverything’s dissection of phones became so popular that DBrand collaborated with him for the teardown skin series back in 2019. Aside from revealing what the insides are, JerryRigEverything added a few easter eggs to make these teardown skins unique.
Looking through the documents that DBrand has filed, it’s very obvious that Casetify blatantly copied the teardown skins–and even included some of the easter eggs–for its “Inside Out” collection. This particular case collection has a more accurate depiction of the innards of Apple devices–and copying the same easter eggs that you’d find on the DBrand teardown skins–particularly JerryRig’s “Glass is Glass, and Glass Breaks”.
To make matters worse, it appeared that Casetify literally copied DBrand’s teardown skins and made only minor tweaks to call the designs their own. JerryRig publicly called out Casetify in his video, and even detailed the work done in order to make a near-accurate rendition of DBrand’s teardown skin–in fact, JerryRig pointed out that it takes them “over 10,000 hours” to produce these skins.
Aside from calling them out, JerryRig is disappointed with Casetify–considering that the case company is said to be valued at almost $1 billion. Casetify has pulled out the “Inside Out” Collection from its website, and they have yet to comment on DBrand’s lawsuit.
