Another step to make the internet a safer place for everyone
As part of celebrating Safer Internet Day every February 11, Google and NGO Teach Peace Build Peace Movement kicked off their Cyberpeace campaign in its push to promote safe and responsible use of the internet to high school students.
Part of the initiative includes mobilizing YouTube creators, teachers, employees, and other volunteers to teach over 10,000 high school digital citizenship. The class covers topics that include using the internet responsibly, combatting misinformation and cancel culture, and internet privacy and security.
The campaign comes at a crucial time, where around 71% of Filipino households rely on digital technology, with 85% of Filipinos worried that their children might be exposed to inappropriate content online. “Through the Cyberpeace campaign, we hope not to only help Filipino families stay safer online but provide a springboard for a shared, nationwide commitment to a more peaceful internet, at the heart of a vibrant digital economy for all Filipinos,” Google Philippines Country Director Bernadette Nacario said.
For Google’s part, the tech giant has introduced several features to ensure the safety of everyone when using the internet. These include 2-step verification, Incognito mode in Chrome, YouTube Kids, and SafeSearch.
To kick off the campaign, YouTube content creator Janina Vela and EduTuber Team Lyqa held pilot classes on digital citizenship at San Francisco High School last February 11. Check out some of the highlights:
