NVIDIA Announces even more Laptop GPUs before the Year Ends

Ahead of its CES 2022 announcements, NVIDIA adds three new laptop GPUs to its lineup with the RTX 2050, MX550, and MX570.

The announcement of the RTX 2050 makes it clear that NVIDIA is not retiring its RTX 20-series GPUs just yet. Unlike the original RTX 20-series GPUs that use Turing architecture, the RTX 2050 uses Ampere architecture–specifically an Ampere GA107 architecture. While it is similar to the RTX 3050 for having 2048 CUDA Cores and 4GB GDDR6 memory, the RTX 2050 only offers a 64-bit memory bus instead of a 128-bit bus found on the RTX 3050.

While it’s not clear why NVIDIA decided to announce a 20-series GPU in late 2021, possible factors include the RTX 2050 being a middle-ground offering between the GTX 1650 and RTX 3050, and as a stopgap measure due to the ongoing chip shortage.

Aside from the RTX 2050, NVIDIA also announced the entry-level MX550 and MX570 laptop GPUs. While NVIDIA is mum on the details of both GPUs, it claims that they will come with “more power-efficient CUDA cores and with faster memory speeds than previous MX GPUs,” with the MX550 being a step up from the MX450.

NVIDIA said that laptops with these new GPUs are expected to arrive in Spring 2022, or around the second quarter of 2022.
